Kantu P5

ILR: 177344

A full-body profile photograph of a medium-sized, light tan and brown suri llama named Kantu P5 with a unique partially shorn coat. The front of the animal is unshorn, with long, dense, shaggy beige and cream fiber that forms a large shaggy mane and neck ruff and covers its front legs and chest. The body and hindquarters of the llama have been shorn close to the skin, revealing a smooth, short tan coat. Long fiber still remains on its lower back legs. The llama is standing on a grassy and dirt area, wearing a black halter and lead rope that is attached and leads to the left. It has dark eyes and ears that are partially upright and facing forward. The background is a mix of green grass, trees with sparse, bare branches, and a wooden fence. The lighting is natural and diffuse. [U]

Imported directly from Peru by Twin Lakes Llama Ranch, Kantu P5 stands as an absolute cornerstone of the North American suri llama industry . Widely recognized as one of the elite sires who marked “the start of suri breeding in North America,” his arrival and subsequent breeding career permanently elevated the standards for suri fiber, conformation, and presence. Often described as one of the most influential and famous suri llamas in the industry, Kantu P5 established a highly sought-after lineage that remains a gold standard for breeders today.

As a celebrated Suri Champion himself, Kantu P5 possessed an extraordinary ability to stamp his best qualities onto his offspring. He produced show winner after show winner, with his progeny consistently topping national sales and dominating the show rings and became “the most famous Suri llama the world has ever known”. Renowned for passing down exquisite fiber coverage, signature structural correctness, and an unmistakable regal presence, his genetics—frequently carried forward by prominent descendants like Peruvian Georgio—are foundational to many of the top-performing suri herds in the country. To have Kantu P5 in a llama’s pedigree is to carry a direct piece of North American suri history and a legacy of proven excellence.

An obituary for Kantu P5 appeared in Llama Life II, issue 95:

Mark and Karen Brant of Twin Lakes Llama Ranch, Monroe, Michigan have reported that Kantu died peacefully of old age early in September of this year. Kantu was part of the 97/98 Peruvian importation. Arguably the most influential herd sire in the industry of more recent times (certainly in style if not genetics) his arrival marked the birth of the suri llama phenomenon. He has sired 193 registered offspring (119 females, 82 males, one gelding). His last registered offspring is PVL Kosmic Explosion born July 26, 2007, male, bred and owned by Larry and Barbara Laux, Pleasure Valley Llamas, Adell, Wisc.
